Action Underway

The increase usage of APUs becomes more important than ever across multiple states in the Eastern United States. Many states have begun to address their current idling laws and how improvements can be made. There are ongoing concerns about the idling laws regarding vehicle emissions and how these emissions are affecting the air quality of the surrounding areas. See below for a few of the specific state concerns and how APUs can work to resolve these matters.  Connecticut: In the state of Connecticut, they are working to expand the enforcement of their idling regulations. Connecticut wants to work to prohibit idling for anything greater than three consecutive minutes. Exceptions are allowed for vehicles to defrost when it is less than 20 degrees outside.  New Jersey: The new bill in New Jersey would revise existing idling laws that currently limit idling to three consecutive minutes. New Jersey hopes to reduce this three-minute regulation down to two minutes. Fines exist from $100 dollars up to $1,000 dollars.  New York: New York hopes to address the fact that 19 million New Yorkers currently live with unhealthy air quality daily. Idling limitations would exist for any vehicle greater than 8,500 pounds. New York hopes to work to limit idling to three minutes. Fines exist from $500 dollars up to as great as $18,000 dollars. Shipping During the Holidays

During the holidays truck drivers are needed more than ever. Seasonal workers are typically hired early on in retail sales, however drivers are already in short supply! During the holiday season from Halloween through New Year, shipping increases to 30% greater than any other time of the year. In order to keep drivers motivated and comfortable, a proper working APU is needed. This APU helps keep truck drivers safe and comfortable as well as every other driver out on the road. Despite inflation increasing dramatically over the last year, spending is strong across the United States. Delivery companies such as UPS are hiring for the seasonal increase at a higher rate than in years past. Amazon has also started early. Amazon is offering an average of $19 per hour to all employees. However, retailers such as Walmart and Target are trimming down the incentives. For example, last holiday season Target was able to offer an increase in pay. However, this year Target is only offering a simple raffle ticket. Walmart is also not taking on nearly as many seasonal workers as in years past. Fears of a recession are real but do not seem to be currently affecting sales. Sales are up from 2021. With the lack of drivers to help accommodate the increased need for shipping, shipping times can and will likely be delayed. Driver Shortage

Since the onset of COVID19 there has been a nationwide increase in demand for goods to be shipped – and shipped quickly. Drivers have been incentivized with an increase in pay and sign on bonuses in recent years in order to help fulfill the increase in demands. In most states drivers make roughly $22-$24 dollars per hour. This is significantly higher than the average $18 per hour most other positions offer with similar qualifications. Fleet Challenges

The current state of the economy has taken its toll on many industries. The reason for this is likely tied up in the toll it has taken on fleets across the country. Maintenance costs were down in the year 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic. As things started reopening and customers started placing more orders, maintenance costs increased in 2021. Now that we are halfway through 2022 we are seeing even greater maintenance costs across the board. There has been a 20.4% increase in repair costs since the year 2020 just to 2022. This is more than a little inflation that companies could have anticipated. In order to help get in front of the small problems that could exist and in order to prevent them becoming large maintenance items, companies are now recommended to check their APUs more often than ever. Rising Diesel Prices

This month the average diesel prices has risen to a record high of $5.473. This is a huge jump in prices just from last month when the national average was less than $4.00. These diesel increases are devastating for freight transportation companies that require fuel. Many diesel trucks are paying close to $2,000 every time they fill up. With prices this high many companies will be forced out of business as the cost to fill the tank has simply eaten away at any potential profits. While an APU can help reduce some costs it cannot entirely eliminate the need for diesel when it comes to freight. Nearly 70% of freight is transported via truck. What this means is that if the companies do survive these massive price increases the cost will be put off onto the consumer. Increasing diesel costs have already contributed to the massive increase in inflation over the last year. However, predictions are that consumers have not yet seen the worst of it as diesel is expected to keep rising. The initial increase in diesel prices were due to the ban on Russian oil. While the United States only receives a small percentage of its oil from Russia we are still trading in a Global Market. After a major crisis occurs, oil prices tend to shoot up but take a significant amount of time to come back down. Consumers can expect to pay more for nearly all commodities across the board. Everything from groceries, building supplies, and online ordering all come via trucks. If we cannot get the cost of diesel down soon not only will businesses go under but consumers will not be able to afford their current lifestyles.
